"ORIGINAL HARLEY-DAVIDSON KNUCKLEHEAD"
by Greg Field
Harley-Davidson stunned the world when it unveiled on November 25, 1935 its new 1936 Over Head Valve EL 61, better known as the "Knucklehead". The race proven overhead-valve technology was impressive in a production bike at a time when sidevalve engines were the order of the day. The Knucklehead MOTOR formed the basis for all Harley-Davidson MOTOR Co. Big Twin Motors to follow - right through to the Evolution "Blockhead" Motors of the 1980s and 90s. After all - the MOTOR is the heart of a MOTOR-cycle!
In addition the new 1936 4-Speed Transmission was the bases for all Big Twin trannys all the way up to 1984!
But what really grabbed enthusiasts' attention was the depression era art deco styling of the new Harleys. The Knucklehead formed the die from which all future cruisers would be cast. Fittingly, Knuckleheads are much sought after by collectors today. This book aids anyone collecting or refurbishing these classic Harleys. It illustrates and describes the correct parts, finishes, and options and trim pieces for all Knuckleheads from the 1936 debut through the 1947 bikes - the last year of production
